Rainbow Snippets*-- Forever Editing

Image
My "other" job is the grocery business and Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest for us each year. It's another reason why NaNo is difficult for me--I'm exhausted by the time I get home from work! Congrats to everyone who did it this month--even if you didn't quite get to 50k. This week's snippet is again taken from the vampire short I've been editing, Fangs for the Memories , and starts a few paragraphs after last week's . Rollie has been joined by his date, Oakley, for the evening and it turned into an argument. But as it turns out, Oakley's constant tardiness is quickly forgotten:             I dropped the conversation. Nothing was going to be accomplished and I was hungry. “Can I get a menu, please?” I asked the bartender as he handed Oakley his cranberry juice concoction.  It was the other bartender, Aja, standing across from me and I stared at his back. I couldn’t tell how long his hair was because it was pulled up in a messy bun,

Rainbow Snippets*--When Writing is Fun

This week's snippet is the opening lines to a short I'm working on for a charity anthology. The theme is "vampires in the workplace" which is completely outside my comfort zone. And I was surprised by how fun it was to write! I'm even thinking about expanding it once I get my rights back, possibly create a series of novelettes that start with Aja's change and include the stories of side characters. I love it when writing is exciting. Fangs For the Memories is a second-chance romance and the MCs, Rollie and Aja (known to Rollie as Alex), haven't seen each other in 15 years. It's told from Rollie's pov:  “Excuse me. The other bartender, what’s his name?” I asked the young man as he handed me my drink. “He looks familiar,” I explained, not wanting to sound like a stalker. “Aja,” he answered dryly. “Like the Continent?” “Not Asia . A-J-A. Like the Steely Dan song.” It was clearly an oft-times repeated response. “Guess I don’t know him

Rainbow Snippets*-- Halloween Concluded

I'm forgoing NaNoWriMo this year because I'm determined to finish the Headphones edits. I'd so rather be writing! I'm close enough now to start thinking about covers and debating whether to publish it as one very long book or as a trilogy of shorter books. Decisions, decisions! (that's the difficulty with self-publishing--no one to make the hard decisions for me!) The final part of my Halloween scene, where Jay's costume is revealed. Click for Part one and Part two . Jay turned, his head tucked down so that all Scoey saw was huge eyes framed by loads of liner and blue eyeshadow. He glided forward in knee-high white mod boots as he batted those eyes slowly, heavy with false eyelashes that feathered out like lustrous black butterfly wings across his cheekbones. His hair was teased up and held back with a wide headband, and somehow it was much too long. Extensions , reasoned the side of Scoey’s brain that still functioned. The dazed half of his bra

Rainbow Snippets*--Trick or Treat Continued

Part 2 of my Headphones Halloween. In last week's snippet , Scoey was dressing in the outfit that Jay gave him. This week, he sees how everyone else is dressed:             “Yup. I called that right,” he thought as he stepped through the front door of the bar to find he was almost the last to arrive. Lenny and Elinor looked like Shaggy and Velma. Richard could have come straight off the set of  Easy Rider  while Bets was a perfect Diana Ross. Marcus was dressed like Elvis, Mick was doing a passable Jim Morrison, and Headphones reminding him of a young Marlo Thomas. His mouth almost dropped open when he spied Honey. She was wearing a bit of nothing--showing off her long legs--that clearly had Barbarella written all over it. He wondered if the outfit was her idea or if it was something Headphones talked her into. Either way, every college boy that came in was going to leave with a hard-on. But no Jay. Scoey debated running upstairs to see what the delay was but stopped when
