Rainbow Snippets*-- Happy Summer

Image
Happy belated first day of summer! Cookie Season, err, I mean The Farmers Market, is in full swing. If this year follows last summer, things will slow down after next weekend, but in the mean time I'm spending every waking moment I'm not at my (other) job in my kitchen. Turns out being on my feet all day isn't as easy as it used to be. My, how I've gotten out of practice. Now I'm really mourning the passing of my swimming pool!  My pool that is no more, and I'm really going to miss over the next few days as our temps skyrocket.  Warning: This snippet from Like Cracks in the Sidewalk is from a sex scene, but it's not explicit. I just really like it. It's from James' POV:  I ran one finger across Val's collarbone, leaving a white line with a scratch of my nail, and drew it down through the thatch of hair, tracing it where it spread across the contours of his chest. His  legs were short and much more muscular than they appeared in his tight jeans,

I'm snipping again from Like Cracks in the Sidewalk . I said a few weeks ago that I was changing tense, but as I got farther into the story, I realized the way I'd written it originally does work better. So, although I still have plenty of work ahead of me, it's maybe not as much as I'd imagine.  James and Val met and moved in together, although they never really defined their relationship. It becomes dysfunctional eventually, and James gets hints of it but tries to ignore it. The book is a single-person POV, told from James' perspective:  In the beginning of a new relationship there’s this constant need to be with the other person, to touch them, to kiss them, to hold them close. Sure, everyone says it’s about getting to know each other, fitting two lives together, that whole ‘making one from two’ thing. But really, who’s fooling who? It’s about the sex. And for us, it was all the sex all the time during that first half year. We may have single-handedly kept the co

Rainbow Snippets*--In Search of a Title!

Just to keep my finger in the writing part of writing, I always have a work in progress that I go to and add a sentence or three every day, with the thought that when I'm done editing the current project, I'll have something already started. At this point, I have several started. It's a huge question as to whether any will get finished, at the rate I'm going!  Sunset on my cruise in March. From a current still unnamed WIP about two men who meet on a cruise. This is Malcolm's first cruise. He's not even sure he wants to be there, but his friend Matt thinks it'll help get him out of his funk. Malcolm is waiting at the terminal, and things are going wrong already! Told from Malcolm's POV: More dots appear at the bottom of my screen as Matt types. Dammit, this is a mess. I pace back and forth--five steps, turn, five steps, turn--and the dots continue to dance. “Ugh,” I moan as I stop walking, only to stumble back as a purple-haired woman on a scooter whizzes

Rainbow Snippets*-- Trying Again

I've missed a few weekends of Rainbow Snippets, but life has thrown a few curve balls my way. Hopefully, the worst is now past and I can get caught up. (Note: We all know that's not going to happen! But we all have our dreams. Right?) Flying the colors! Today's snippet is from Like Cracks in the Sidewalk . The editing is taking much too long, but I decided to change the tense, so back to page one! This scene is in the early days of James and Val's relationship. Told from James' POV:  Stepping out of the shower, I grab a couple of towels from the cabinet, wrapping one around my waist and handing the other to Val. Before he can dry himself, I pull him forward. He tries to stop me, but I take his hands and hold them between my own.  “Please? Let me?” He sucks in a deep breath but loosens his tight grip. I’ve noticed he doesn’t mind being naked, as long as I’m not really looking. That he’s allowing me to dry him does a strange thing in my chest , some kind of tightness
