Rainbow Snippets*–Goodbye August!

Image
Horrible heat here this past week. I'll be happy if that doesn't happen again! Our poor old air conditioner couldn't keep up and tagged out. The husband got it going again, at least for a little while. Just another thing to be stressed about. (On the upside, we did get a nice rain that broke the heat.) The old silo at the Nature Center. It's the last structure standing from before, when one of my friends lived in the house, now long gone.  Snipping again from Like Cracks in the Sidewalk . James accompanied Val home after rescuing him from a thug harassing him after his show, and subsequently spent the night (but slept on the couch.) He wakes up before Val and is getting a look around his apartment. Told from James POV: I took my meager breakfast to the living room. Flipping a switch on the wall, I looked around. There were splashes of color scattered here and there amongst the otherwise beige blandness. Thin-papered posters were tacked to the drywall in a random pattern

Rainbow Snippets*—Fifty Four Years Ago

School started here this week. Where has the summer gone? Life has been so busy and I don't know when it's going to slow down. I'm at one of those turning points we all have in our life, but at the moment I'm not sure which direction it's going to take.  I'm snipping from Fangs for Everything since Woodstock happened 54 years ago this week. It always fascinated me, even when I was a kid. I was 5 years old in '69. Too bad my folks hadn't been hippies and gone! The story starts when 350-year-old vampire Artemis goes to Woodstock with a couple of young hitchhikers, and has just awakened in the back of his van after the second day:  When I woke up, I wasn’t alone. Alex was sitting cross-legged, humming and rolling marijuana cigarettes. “Hi! Want a smoke?” “Not my thing.” I could inhale, and my sense of smell was sensitive, but it took effort and wouldn’t get me high. I could hear people close by and music feeding through the stage speakers, but no rain. “It

Rainbow Snippets*—Whiskey

I've finished another round of edits, and had originally planned on posting the chapters of Like Cracks in the Sidewalk on Amazon Vella as I do one last round before publishing it as a book. But I'm rethinking that strategy. I need someone to be in charge and tell me what to do!   One of my sunflowers as it unfolds. Snipping from Like Cracks in the Sidewalk once again. This snippet comes from a conversation between James and his friend, Dean, that takes place during a dinner party. This may--possibly--be inspired from an incident in my own youth! (And I still can't drink whiskey!)      I was saved from [Molly's] further interrogation when Dean handed me a glass and I looked up questioningly. “Whiskey. I know you aren’t very keen on wine.”       He was right, and I grinned up at him in grateful thanks. He winked at me, ghosts of parties past still vivid between us. “Remember that night we ended up at Denny’s at two in the morning and they almost kicked us out?”
