Rainbow Snippets*--April Showers (In May)

Image
It's turned cold and rainy. We, oddly enough, need the rain. It's been a dry Spring. But I could do without this cool front. I want to get in the pool, but it's not going to happen for at least a couple more weeks.  Silver, our little lady, is giving me a pose.  Lindsey, from Cinders and Ash , has been featured in recent Rainbow Snippets, but she made her first appearance in Embers and Flame . At the time, my daughter had dyed her hair green, and I really liked it, so Cherry's sister came into the story with green hair. I wasn't planning on writing a series, but Vaughn, Daryl, and Lindsey all took on lives of their own. They needed their own stories. Introducing Lindsey (told from Cherry's POV): The knock came again, more insistent. I straightened and ran my hand over my shirt, doing what I could to smooth the wrinkles.  “Hey, that was–” I started to say as I opened the door, but instead of a gorgeous dark-haired hunk in black denim standing there, I found my gr

Rainbow Snippets*--More Squirrel Tales

It's been a slow writing week-- I think too much time was spent taking care of Peanut. He appeared to be using his back legs more, but we couldn't get a good feel for it since the "medi hutch" consisted of two bird cages that we wired together. But with a little elbow grease and some scrap lumber, the husband built a squirrel house and we crossed our fingers and released Peanut from his make-shift hospital.  He's moved right in. He scampers up and down the tree, albeit with a slightly awkward gait. We take him treats and there's a water bowl on "the deck". He's quite pampered...  ...and happy! This week's snippet is from Embers and Flame (book 1 of the Campfire Stories series). The setting is a campground where Ben stopped after having trouble with his motorcycle. He's spent the week with Cherry, the man camping in the next site, and the two have grown close. These are Ben's thoughts as he contemplates leaving: The coffee was ready by

Rainbow Snippets*-- It's Raining...Squirrels?

This week has been all about squirrels. Or, more to the point, one particular squirrel. He's young and I suspect he tried to jump from one garage roof to the other and didn't quite make it. His back legs aren't working right. Hopefully, it's a broken leg that will heal and we can release him, but if he doesn't regain full function in a couple of weeks, I guess we'll be looking at hutch designs.  Introducing Peanut. Another snippet from Cinders and Ash , the third book in the Campfire Stories series. This snip is told from Lindsey's POV. Lindsey is aromantic and being with Brian is challenging everything she's always believed about herself:       My heart did a triple beat as I stepped around Brian. He was partially blocking the doorway and I brushed against him. The smell of shampoo and soap enveloped me, and underlying that was, well, not a scent as much as his essence—heat and skin and vitality. I was confused. I was drawn to Brian in a way I’d never

Rainbow Snippets*--May in Bloom

Snow last week, rain this week. At least the frogs are happy! I dug up most of the flower beds a few years ago and replaced the ornamentals with edibles. But there are still plenty of flowers to attract the bees and the hummingbirds! Last week snow, this week rain. But the flowers are blooming, so it's all good.  This week's snippet again comes from Cinders and Ash . Lindsey fell asleep on the couch while she and Brian were watching a ball game, and she wakes to find she's used him as a pillow. From Lindsey's POV: It had grown dark outside, but I blinked up at him as my eyes adjusted to the lamplight. “Sorry.” I moved to sit up, but his hand on my shoulder held me down.              “Don’t be,” he said and leaned over to kiss me. It was soft, nothing more than a slip of his lips against mine, almost as if he feared I’d shove him away. Reaching up, I wrapped my hand around the back of his neck, holding him there, and returned the kiss. The television was off and the roo
