Rainbow Snippets* – Time For Better Things

My Rainbow Snippets have become a monthly thing instead of a weekly! Hopefully, I can find a rhythm and get more consistent. After the store I was employed at sold a year and a half ago, things have been tense. And that all got amped up a couple of months ago. It all came to a head the week before last, and I now find myself unemployed. The future is a bit uncertain, and I'll need to find a new job eventually, but I'm feeling much more at peace. The Farmers Market has started, and I'll be baking and selling cookies for the next four months, so I'm not in a hurry. After all, everyone deserves a little break now and then. Plus, I'm actually (finally) making headway on my current WIP, Delicious

Stone fireplace framed by wood and class built in cabinets.
The inspiration for Hanson's fireplace.

Story premise: Grady bought a house sight-unseen after deciding to move from the city to a small town, and hired a contractor to remodel it. It's a couple of months later, and Hanson, the contractor, is showing him the work he's done. One thing is a fireplace in the kitchen. Snippet from Hanson's POV:

“I love the look of it, but we never talked about a fireplace,” Grady remarked as he ran his hand over the river stone that framed the firebox. “Where did you get the idea?”

“I don’t know.” And I didn’t. “Every time I walked through, it was like I saw it out of the corner of my eye.”

It wasn’t a conscious decision. I bought the materials a little at a time, stacking them in the corner until I had everything. It only took one rainy day to pull it all together, as if I was in a trance. Which was a ridiculous idea, but I barely remembered building it, and in retrospect, it was more work than one person should be able to accomplish in a single ten-hour period. But there it was, a beautiful piece of workmanship. I doubted I could replicate it.
