Rainbow Snippets*--Bar Games

I like to read books in a series, both the kind that follow the same couple and the kind that follow a group of friends and family. I also like to write them. I've found that as I write the first book, the side characters develop their own backstories, and it's fun to explore that. Sadly, I'm a chaotic writer. I'm horrible at sticking to a plot. Often, as I write, something emerges that I hadn't planned, but it's better. That's fine if it's the first book, not so good if it's the last, especially if it changes a detail in one that came before. Book 1 not published yet? Great! I can go back and make any changes I need to. Unfortunately, it means I have several books sitting in the queue, waiting for that last book.

Happy Memorial Day to those in the US. 

Blind Ante is the first book in my Bar Games series. It was a NaNoWriMo project pre-Covid. The second book, Cut Shot, came a few years later. And now I'm working on the third book, Slam Tilt. I'd like to say I'll publish in the fall, but I'm such a slow writer, we'll see!

Come home
Two words. They tore his heart out of his chest and made his eyes burn, but this time not from the wind. Home, Reese had said. Not back. And that was the thing. Jordan had lived there for barely more than a season, but the trailer had become that for him. More of a home than he’d ever known. Even before his mother left, their house hadn’t been a safe place. The screeching arguments, his father’s drinking, the plates thrown at the wall to shatter into hundreds of pieces, his mother’s tears. It had only ever been “the house” in his mind. He’d never called it home. Now, when he envisioned home, it was metal siding, aluminum windows, and old wooden furniture. He smelled musty carpet and sandalwood candles. Home was Reese.

It's 4th of July weekend here in the US. I used to really like it, back when I was younger. We'd have a cook-out with friends, or go camping, then in the evening go watch fireworks. But also, back then, fireworks without a license were illegal in my state, and in my town. It's not now. And , it's not just one night of my neighbors setting off bang after bang late into the night. Rainbow Snippets--Blind Ante

I've starting to feel like Blind Ante and Cut Shot are never getting published. Always, there is something else that has a higher priority. I'm working on a novella at the moment for a project at the end of the year. Since it's a group project, it's front and center. And since I'm a slow writer, it'll probably take me all summer to finish the first draft. I need life to slow down! In this snippet from Blind Ante , Jordan has come into the bar where Reese works. He's not usually much of a drinker, but on this one night, there is something obviously bothering him. After a couple of shots and a beer, he starts singing. The little ditty has significance later in the story. Do you recognize it? Reese went back to work, tossing bottles and flirting, but he kept an eye on Jordan as he sat with his jaw resting on his palm. Rainbow Snippets*—I'm Not Ready

For many people, autumn is their favorite season. I suppose it used to be mine because I didn't like the heat. But that changed as I got older. I'd like autumn better if winter didn't follow. My mood has taken a definite downswing during the last couple weeks, when the temperature dropped 15° below average overnight. It was the end of our swimming days, and it was too soon! On the upside, no pool time ahs meant more writing time, and I finished the first draft of my WIP. Now the real work begins! It's apple time–one of the good things about autumn, I'll admit.  From my current WIP, Delicious : Grady hired contractor Hanson to refurbish a house in the country he bought, sight unseen, and has just arrived unannounced. Hanson has his niece and nephew with him, and has sent them outside while he gives Grady a quick tour.
