Rainbow Snippets*  — Sailing Away

It's less than two months until the Rainbow Readers Cruise, and I'm so ready to go! I love cruising, and I love books. It's the perfect combination! I've been reading the charity anthology below.  It's a great lead-up to the trip. Let me know in the comments if you will be there, too.

Several years ago, I jotted down some ideas for a cruise-themed story and occasionally I pull it up and add to it. It's become a "between other projects" project. I'm having a hard time plotting Slam Tilt—a bit of writer's block, I suppose—but the cruise and the anthology have gotten me excited about Cruising (working title). Who knows, maybe I'll actually finish it!

This week's snippet is the opening paragraphs, told from Malcolm's POV. He's having a rough time of it, poor guy: 

    Matt claims he’s my best friend. Insists that he is! But I don’t believe it. I might have believed it yesterday, possibly even an hour ago, but now, standing in the southern Florida heat with sweat trickling into my collar, I curse the very second we met. Because it led here. And here is utter chaos.
    Over-excited people are milling around, pulling suitcases behind them, barely managing to not crash into each other. Some are rummaging through bags, blocking the way for other people trying to go… Well, I don’t know where they’re trying to go. There is an alarming number of kids darting in and out, seemingly feral and raised in the jungle. Are children usually this hyper, or have their parents shoved sugar-coated donuts down their gullets in their hurry to arrive at the terminal on time? Because why else are they jumping around like ducks standing on a hot plate? Maybe that’s just how kids act.

It's 4th of July weekend here in the US. I used to really like it, back when I was younger. We'd have a cook-out with friends, or go camping, then in the evening go watch fireworks. Rainbow Snippets*—I'm Not Ready

For many people, autumn is their favorite season. I suppose it used to be mine because I didn't like the heat. But that changed as I got older. I'd like autumn better if winter didn't follow. My mood has taken a definite downswing during the last couple weeks, when the temperature dropped 15° below average overnight. It was the end of our swimming days, and it was too soon! On the upside, no pool time ahs meant more writing time, and I finished the first draft of my WIP. Now the real work begins! It's apple time–one of the good things about autumn, I'll admit.  From my current WIP, Delicious : Grady hired contractor Hanson to refurbish a house in the country he bought, sight unseen, and has just arrived unannounced. Hanson has his niece and nephew with him, and has sent them outside while he gives Grady a quick tour. Rainbow Snippets*–August Edition

Halfway through August? How did that happen? I don't have kids at home anymore, so it caught me by surprise when the first day of school rolled around. To be fair, they start earlier than they used to. Of course, the school year ends earlier than it used to. I'm not sure I understand why that all shifted, but everything changes. It's life! It also means I'm halfway through our Farmers Market season, and things have slowed down. I'll have to look for a new job soon, but it's been nice, having the summer off. And by off, I mean not having to dress and fix my hair, leave the house, come home, and spend the afternoon baking. Now, it's ratty shorts and barefoot while I bake. (I hate shoes.) Soft iced sugar cookies–my number one seller at the Farmers Market. From Embers and Flame ; Cherry (Charles) and Ben meet at a campground and spend the week together.
